Jama Masjid Hussainabad or Masjid Malika Jahan
In the year 1839 in Lucknow City, King Muhammad Ali Shah started constructing Jama Masjid in Tahsinganj area of the city with the intention to surpass the Jama Masjid at Delhi in size and look. But due to the sudden death of the king, the construction work of this grand Masjid was taken up and completed by one of his wives, Malika Jahan Begum in 1845 AD.It is said that she spent almost all her treasure in its construction. It is built with lakhauri bricks (small size bricks) and plastered with lime, it is decorated with coloured stuco motifs. Standing on a square lofy terrace, it has a rectangular prayer hall on the west with a magnificient facade of eleven arches. The central one is higher and provided with an unusually high doorway which rises above the flat roof in a sharply pointed arch decorated in coloured stucco. The prayer hall is surmounted by pear shaped high double domes decorated with an inverted lotus on the top and is also flanked by two octagonal four storeyed tapering minarets on either side crowned by chhatris on the top. This is a very beautiful Mosque with tall minarets and domes. You will love to see the then architectural excellence It is one of the most beautiful Mosque in India. Please note Non-muslims are not allowed inside the prayer halls of Mosque. If you prefer to see it with little distance, you will be asked to take off your shoes and be on the raised platform to view its excellent architecture.
